Borage (Borago officinalis) An annual herb featuring vibrant blue, star-shaped edible flowers and cucumber-flavored leaves. Seeds germinate within 5-15 days at 70°F soil temperature and remain viable for 2-3 years when properly stored. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep with 12-18 inch spacing in zones 3-10. This drought-tolerant herb matures in 8-10 weeks and self-seeds readily. Borage attracts beneficial pollinators, making it a valuable companion plant. Disease resistant and deer-resistant, it prefers well-draining soil with pH 6.0-7.0. Special characteristics include high omega-6 fatty acids in seeds and its historical use as a mood enhancer.
