Gituru Long (Sorghum bicolor) from the Poaceae family features medium-sized, elongated seeds (4-5mm long) with deep reddish-brown coloration. This traditional East African variety germinates in 7-10 days, maturing in 100-120 days, growing 2-3m tall requiring 45-60cm spacing. Plant 2-3cm deep when soil warms to 18°C in well-draining soil with pH 5.5-7.5. Requires full sun, moderate water, and demonstrates excellent drought tolerance. Shows good resistance to common sorghum pests. Harvest when seed heads droop and seeds harden, yielding 1.5-2kg per square meter. Seeds store 2-3 years and are prized for flour production, traditional porridges, and local brewing applications.
