Gashiko, a traditional East African bean variety (Phaseolus vulgaris) from the Fabaceae family, features small, round seeds with distinctive light brown coloration and dark speckles. Seeds measure 5-7mm in diameter, germinate within 8-12 days, and mature in 75-90 days. Plants grow 30-45cm tall, requiring 25-30cm spacing between plants in full sun conditions. Plant 1.5-2cm deep in well-draining soil with pH 6.0-7.0 after soil temperatures reach 16°C. Gashiko beans need moderate water, are drought-tolerant once established, and resist common bean diseases. Harvest when pods dry and rattle, yielding 1-1.5kg per square meter. Seeds store for 2-3 years and are prized in traditional East African stews and porridges.
