Kunde (Vigna unguiculata), commonly known as cowpea, is a drought-resistant legume from the Fabaceae family featuring small, kidney-shaped seeds (6-8mm long) with cream to light brown coloration and distinctive black "eye" markings. Seeds germinate in 5-7 days, maturing in 60-90 days, with plants growing 30-60cm tall requiring 20-30cm spacing. Plant 2cm deep when soil reaches 18°C in well-draining soil with pH 5.5-6.5. Kunde thrives in full sun with minimal water and fertilization needs, showing excellent resistance to heat and pests. Harvest when pods turn yellow-brown, yielding 1-2kg per square meter. Seeds store 3-4 years and are nutritionally rich, commonly used in East African soups, stews, and as leafy greens.
