Mwere (Eleusine coracana), commonly known as finger millet, from the Poaceae family features tiny, round seeds (1-2mm diameter) with reddish-brown coloration. This ancient African grain germinates in 3-5 days, maturing in 80-120 days, growing 60-120cm tall requiring 15-20cm spacing. Plant seeds 1cm deep when soil reaches 18°C in well-draining soil with pH 5.0-7.0. Mwere thrives in full sun, tolerates drought and poor soils, requiring minimal inputs. Harvest when seed heads turn brown, yielding 0.8-1.2kg per square meter. Seeds store exceptionally well for 4-5 years. Nutritionally dense with calcium and iron, traditionally used for porridge, flour, and brewing in East African communities.
