Nyakairo (Finger Millet) An indigenous drought-resistant grain crop with exceptional storage life. Seeds germinate within 3-7 days at soil temperatures above 65°F and remain viable for up to 5 years. Plant 1/4 inch deep by broadcasting or in rows 10 inches apart in zones 8-11. This gluten-free ancient grain matures in 90-120 days and thrives in marginal soils with minimal inputs. Highly resistant to most storage pests and fungal diseases. Special characteristics include exceptional calcium content (5-30 times higher than other cereals), ability to withstand intermittent drought periods, and multi-purpose use for food, fodder, and traditional brewing practices.
