Yellow Mayai (Phaseolus vulgaris), or "egg beans," are distinctive Kenyan legumes from the Fabaceae family featuring medium-sized, oval-shaped seeds (8-10mm long) with bright yellow coloration resembling egg yolks. Seeds germinate in 7-10 days, maturing in 80-95 days, with plants growing 40-55cm tall requiring 25-35cm spacing. Plant 2-3cm deep after frost in well-draining soil with pH 6.0-7.0. These beans prefer full sun, moderate water, and light fertilization. They show good resistance to common bean diseases while yielding approximately 1.3kg per square meter when pods dry and rattle. Seeds store 2-3 years and are prized in Kenyan cuisine for their rich, buttery flavor and creamy texture in traditional dishes.
